When returning from the first crusade, a little bit of earth fron Palestine was spread out on the highest point of the village. On this place, was erected the church in the eleventh century, called Sancta Terra ( to-day it is classified as a historical monument ). It is the church that gave its name to the village, located on one of the roads to Santiago de Compostela.

Village of fishermen, one fishery already existed in the fifteenth century at Lavagnac. Still today professional fishermen continue this activity fishing migrant fish (lamprey, shad, eel and elvers ).
